Doug's
comments about the Stamp image titled "Sanctuary".
"In the late 1980's I was flying from Albuquerque to Denver
and shortly after taking off noticed an exceptional terrain
outside the cabin window. We were just east of Mt. Taylor and
I made a mental note to return later to explore. At the time
I was living in Santa Fe. When I identified the location on
a map I found a road leading into the Rio Puerco drainage off
of Hwy 550, south of Cuba. At the time I visited and camped
there it was BLM land and thus easily accessible. I returned
many times over the next few years, but in the early 90's it
became a Wilderness Study Area and camping was no longer possible."
"The image titled "Sanctuary" is a view of the
Rio Puerco looking northeast at sunset. This drainage is notable
for the volcanic necks that dot its landscape, such as Cabezon
Peak. The two peaks in this picture are Cerro Cuate on the left,
and Cerro Chafo on the right. From this angle of view Cabezon
Peak is directly behind Chafo. This remains one of my favorite
places to visit in the entire State. Because it is remote and
pristine, the title "Sanctuary" seemed appropriate
for the location and the experiences I have had there."
