Hand & Eye is a showing of original Monotype prints and Solar Plate Etchings. In this body of work I’ve been investigating the strength and power of mark making. The strokes of a brush or line drawn record the artist’s inner vision. These images are recognizable yet have abstract qualities as well.
My Monotype prints are created by hand painting etching inks on multiple layers of thin plastic plates the size of the actual image, then transferring the ink to paper using the pressure of an etching press. This is a one-time printing and hence the finished artwork is an original. Some of the monotypes in this series also have pastels added to complete the image.
Solar Plate Etchings are a method of preparing plates without the use of toxic acid baths traditionally used to etch copper or zinc plates. Solar plates are made with a thin photosensitive polymer coating on a thin steel plate. It is a new, artist friendly spontaneous medium for printmaking.
